Zen & Tonic Song List

Classic Rock, Contemporary and R & B

Zen and Tonic is a classic rock and R& B band, featuring Pam & Dave, Steve Smith on bass and vocals and Chuck Mandich on drums and vocals. With the addition of this powerhouse rhythm section and killer harmonies, we are getting back to our roots as a rock and roll band.  With all this talent on stage, you can only expect amazing music and good times wherever we play!

Pam & Dave/Zenergy
Zen & Tonic

Zen & Tonic is the culmination of four Valley musicians: Guitarist Dave Swanstrom, vocalist/keyboardist Pam Swanstrom, drummer Chuck Mandich and bassist, Steve Smith.

Dave, a California native, has been a dedicated musician for over 40 years, taking up the guitar in his teens. He studied at Dick Grove School of music, and with such luminaries as Lee Ritenour, Joe Pass, and developed a passion for the guitar giants Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, combining his love of jazz and rock & roll. Dave performed in numerous variety bands, a percussion ensemble, and worked as a session musician. In 2012, Dave received a degree in audio production.

Pam grew up in St. Louis, singing in the choir, which was mostly made up of her very musical family She played piano from an early age and was self-taught on ukulele (before it was cool) and guitar.. A year after graduating high school, she began her musical career, concentrating on singing, with variety and top 40 bands and traveling throughout California and Hawaii. She studied voice with Eric Futterer, an associate of Seth Riggs, for several years, and also studied voice and piano in college. When not performing, she teaches piano and voice students, which includes those with special needs.

After nearly 25 years as a duo, Pam and Dave decided to create “Zen & Tonic “, going back to their roots as a “rock ‘n roll band”.

Chuck Mandich has been playing drums since he was a teen. In 1985, he relocated to Arizona from Seattle , Washington and got into the blues scene, playing with many of the local blues artists in the valley. Chuck has been involved in many original projects, variety bands and done many recording sessions playing an amazing array of genres: oldies, blues, country, rock, r&b, funk, classic rock, rock, and jazz fusion. Prior to Zen & Tonic, he performed with variety group, “Outside The Line”.

Steve Smith has been playing professionally for over forty years. Starting in the early 70’s, he covered New England from clubs in Boston to ski lodges in Vermont and the beaches of Cape Cod. Moving to Arizona in 1994, Steve was active in the Tucson club scene playing many venues including Chicago Bar, Rocket 88, Hotel Congress and many of the Famous Sam’s.  Moving to the Valley in 2001, Steve has continued his musical journey contributing to groups as varied as The Chauffeurs (oldies), Almost Famous (folk), Streamline (rock, country and jazz) and Guilty Pleasures (everything). He even participated in the annual Phoenix Blues Challenge for several years finishing second (talk about politics!) twice. Joining Zen & Tonic, Steve looks forward to many more years of doing what he loves best, playing for an audience. “I will stop playing when they kick dirt on my grave.”
